The world’s most costly house, Buckingham Palace is also the most ‘roomy’ with 775 rooms, 188 servant rooms, 52 royal and guest beds, 92 offices, 78 bathrooms, and 19 staterooms. Buckingham Palace is formally a Crown property. 

The palace has over 828,000 square feet in size, and the garden alone is 40 acres. Since 1873, it has served as the monarchy’s official home. In their portfolio, they have expensive properties. The palace, located in the Centre of Westminster, is also in the foreground of state events and imperial banquets.

Significance of Buckingham Palace:

The northwest pavilion was transformed by the Royal Family into a swimming pool in 1938. Buckingham presents itself as more of a town than a palace with a Post Office, pool, police station, cinema, health center, and so many other facilities! The Palace Chapel was demolished by a German bomb, and a film of the devastation was shown in theatres across the UK to illustrate how the war affected both the wealthy and the poor equally.

Famously, members of the Royal Family have greeted throngs of people outside the Palace from the balcony on the East Front. Some of the more well-known occasions are King George V’s appearance on the eve of World War I or, more recently, Kate Middleton and Prince William’s post-marriage kiss. Up to 8,000 people have been known to attend garden parties at the palace! The oldest portion of the palace is the wine vaults, which are situated beneath the West Wing. Before the house was ever thought of as a royal palace, the Duke of Buckingham owned these cellars.

Buckingham Palace – History:

The castle was initially built by English Gentleman and Architect William Winde as a large mansion for Duke Buckingham. It was known as Buckingham House in 1703. The house became known as The Queen’s House after King George III purchased it in 1761 to serve as Queen Charlotte’s private retreat.

The mansion was converted into the palace that we know today during the reign of King George IV. The home underwent restorations in the 19th century, adding three more wings around a central courtyard. A famous and long-reigning queen of Britain, Queen Victoria, made the palace her London residence in 1837. Michael Fagan broke into the royal residence in 1982 and went into Queen Elizabeth II’s bedroom.
