Billionaire Leonard Alan Lauder was born on 19 March 1933. Based in the United States (US) he is known as a philanthropist and art collector as well. He is the son of Estée Lauder and Joseph Lauder who are the founders of the famous cosmetic brand Estée Lauder. Lauder held the position of CEO of the company until the year 1999, which he had officially joined in 1958.

Early Life and Education

Born in a Jewish family, Lauder has a brother Joseph Lauder. He graduated from Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and before he served in the US Navy as a lieutenant, he went to study at the Graduate School of Business which is under Columbia University.

Lauder married Evelyn Hausner in the year 1959 with whom he has two children, both sons William Philip Lauder and Gary. His wife died in 2011 and he remarried Judy Ellis-Glickman in 2015. Both of them are holding the positions of executive chairman of Estée Lauder Companies and managing director of Lauder Partners LLC respectively.

Lauder joined his family business at the early age of 25 and is credited for starting Estée Lauder’s first research and development laboratory. The company acquired other companies under his leadership, the acquired companies include MAC, Bobbi Brown, and Aveda.

Career and Other Significant Work

Despite stepping down as the CEO of Estée Lauder in the year 1999, he continues to be the Chairman Emeritus of the company and is called ‘Chief Teaching Officer’. He is also popularly known as an art collector and it is said that he began buying art deco postcards when he was just six-year-old. He has also written a memoir named ‘The Company I Keep: My Life in Beauty’. The memoir was published in 2020.

Other than that, he is a significant philanthropist. He is a part of several social work-related foundations and is directly involved in them. Such as, he is a co-founder and chairman of the Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation, member of the Council on Foreign Relations, trustee of the Aspen Institute, chairman of The Aspen Institute International Committee, honorary chair of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, as well as the member of the President’s Council of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Hospital.

Estée Lauder went public on The New York Stock Exchange in 1996 while he was holding the position of CEO of the company. Bloomberg Billionaires Index estimated his net worth at over $32.3 billion by September 2021, while Forbes mentions his net worth at $22.7 billion.
